Ridge Capping & Pointing

Bedding, Pointing and Why It Fails

The capping tiles that run along the ridges and hips of a roof sit on a bed of mortar and are sealed with a layer of pointing. Together they hold the caps in place and keep water out.

Over the years the old mortar cracks and washes out, and the pointing goes brittle and breaks up. The caps start to move, gaps open up, and water runs straight into the roof. It's one of the most common problems we find on older Peninsula roofs.

We re-bed the caps where the mortar has failed and repoint with a flexible pointing compound that flexes with the roof instead of cracking straight back out.

What We Do

Ridge & Pointing Services

Why Choose Us

Flexible Pointing That Actually Lasts

A lot of the leaking ridge caps we see were repointed years ago with rigid mortar that cracked straight back out. We use flexible pointing, which moves with the roof as it heats and cools, so the fix holds for the long term.

Get the bedding and pointing right and you fix the most common leak on a tiled roof. It's often the single most valuable repair we do.

  • Tiled roof specialists — over 12 years' experience
  • Flexible pointing that moves with the roof and lasts
  • Fixes the most common cause of tiled roof leaks
  • Done on its own or as part of a full restoration
  • Owner-operated, fully insured, tidy on site

Ridge Capping & Pointing Across Mornington & the Peninsula

Re-Bedding

Re-bedding is the fix when the mortar bed under the ridge caps has broken down and the caps have started to move. We lift the loose caps, clear out the old bedding, and re-lay them on fresh mortar so they sit solid again. It's the foundation the pointing goes on top of.

Repointing & Flexible Pointing

Repointing seals the ridge caps and locks them down. The key is the material: we use a flexible pointing compound that moves with the roof through the heat and cold instead of the rigid mortar that cracks and washes out within a few years. Done right, it's a long-term fix, not a patch.

Ridge Capping & Mortar Repairs

Where caps are cracked, loose or have been dislodged in a storm, we repair or replace them and repoint the line so it's watertight again. Cracked and washed-out bedding mortar is repaired at the same time. On the older tiled roofs common across the Peninsula, ridge work like this is often the difference between a dry ceiling and a leaking one.

Part of a Full Restoration

Re-bedding and repointing the ridge caps is a standard part of every roof restoration we carry out. If your whole roof is tired, it usually makes sense to do the pointing as part of a clean, repair and reseal rather than on its own.

Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • It depends on how much ridge and hip line the roof has and whether the caps need re-bedding as well as repointing. We measure it up and give you a clear price before starting, with no charge for the quote.

  • Re-bedding is re-laying the ridge caps on a fresh mortar bed when the old bedding has failed. Repointing is sealing over that bedding with flexible pointing. A roof might need just repointing, or both, depending on how far gone the mortar is.

  • Rigid mortar doesn't move as the roof heats and cools, so it cracks and washes out, often within a few years. Flexible pointing flexes with the roof, which is why it holds up far longer and is the standard we use.

  • Very often, yes. Failed bedding and pointing let the caps move and open gaps for water to run straight into the roof. It's one of the first things we check on a leaking tiled roof.

  • Done properly with flexible pointing on a sound bed, it lasts many years. The exact lifespan depends on the roof's exposure, but it far outlasts the old rigid mortar it replaces.

  • We're based in Mornington and work across the whole Peninsula, plus Frankston, the bayside suburbs, Kingston and Greater Dandenong. Not sure if you're in range? Call 0434 234 517 and ask.
