The Problem

The Mortar Doing the Quiet Work

Mortar holds a tiled roof's ridge caps in place and seals the joins. It's out of sight and out of mind until it starts to fail — and on the Peninsula, decades of sun, salt and weather crack it, crumble it and wash it out.

As the mortar goes, the caps lose their support and the seal opens up. What starts as a bit of crumbling in the gutter ends as loose caps and water getting into the roof.

How We Fix It

Repaired at the Root, Sealed on Top

We repair cracked and washed-out bedding mortar so the caps have solid support again. Where the mortar bed has fully failed, that means re-bedding the caps; where it's still mostly sound, we make good and reseal.

Then we finish with flexible pointing over the top, so the repair is protected and holds for the long term rather than crumbling again next summer.

  • Cracked and washed-out mortar made good
  • Re-bedding where the bed has fully failed
  • Sealed over with flexible pointing to last
  • Owner-operated, fully insured, tidy on site

Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • They're related but not the same. Mortar repair deals with the bedding that supports the caps; repointing seals over the top with flexible pointing. A roof often needs both — we'll check and tell you what yours needs.

  • Crumbly bits of mortar in the gutters, visible cracks along the ridge, and caps that look loose or uneven are the usual signs. We can get up and check the state of it for you.

  • It depends on how much of the ridge and hip line is affected and whether re-bedding is needed. We measure it up and give you a clear price, at no charge for the quote.

  • If the leak is coming from failed ridge mortar and pointing — which is very common — then yes. If there's more going on, we'll find it and tell you, so the leak is actually fixed rather than partly patched.
