Roof Repointing in Mornington

Fresh flexible pointing seals your ridge caps, locks them down and keeps water out. One of the most valuable repairs on an older tiled roof, across Mornington and the Peninsula.

The Problem

Pointing Is the Roof's Front Line

The pointing is the visible layer of mortar that seals the ridge caps to the tiles. It takes the full force of the weather, so it's usually the first thing to go — cracking, going brittle and breaking away, often within a few years if the old rigid mortar was used.

Once it's gone, gaps open up along the ridge and water runs straight into the roof. Failed pointing is one of the most common causes of leaks we find on Peninsula homes.

How We Do It

Sealed With Pointing That Flexes

We clear away the old, failed pointing and apply fresh flexible pointing along the ridge and hip lines. Unlike the old rigid mortar, flexible pointing moves with the roof as it heats and cools, so it doesn't crack straight back out.

If the mortar bed under the caps has also failed, repointing alone won't hold and we'll re-bed them first. We'll always tell you which your roof actually needs.

  • Old pointing cleared, fresh flexible pointing applied
  • Moves with the roof instead of cracking out
  • Fixes one of the most common roof leaks
  • Owner-operated, fully insured, tidy on site

Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • It depends on how much ridge and hip line the roof has and whether the caps also need re-bedding. We measure it up and give you a clear price before starting, with no charge for the quote.

  • With flexible pointing on a sound bed, many years — far longer than the old rigid mortar it replaces. The exact lifespan depends on how exposed the roof is to sun and salt.

  • Very often, yes. Failed pointing opens gaps along the ridge that let water straight in, so it's one of the first things we check on a leaking tiled roof.

  • Only if the mortar bed under the caps has failed too. If it's just the surface pointing that's gone, repointing on its own does the job. We'll check and tell you which you need.
